Situation
NHS and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) faced a critical challenge: rapidly deploying complex MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) medical information to 10,000+ healthcare professionals during a public health emergency. Dense regulatory documentation—originally 3,000+ words of technical medical guidance—was incomprehensible to time-pressured clinicians who needed immediate, actionable information at point of care.
Task
Design Lead, Deloitte NHS Health & Human Services. Transform dense regulatory content into an intuitive, print-ready patient information guide that maintained 100% medical accuracy while meeting NHS accessibility standards and sprint delivery timelines.
Action
Conducted research with NHS clinicians who had just 45 seconds to comprehend guidance at point of care. Distilled 3,000 words into a 3-tier hierarchy and tested on paper prototype variations. Developed wireframes with MHRA, NHS, and Deloitte teams, transforming complex decision trees into scannable visual pathways. Built a modular component system for future customisation.
Result
Won Gov.uk Gold Standard for User-Centred Design and NHS & Deloitte Excellence Award.
Delivered 85% faster comprehension (45 seconds vs. 6 minutes) across 10,000+ deployments with zero clinical errors. Design system became Deloitte NHS gold standard, generating 60% efficiency gains across 15+ projects and adopted by 20+ NHS communications and 3 UK health agencies.
Paper prototypes explored content hierarchy through iterative testing. Digital wireframes simplified information structure for high-pressure medical environments. Final design system delivered reusable templates for emergency medical communications across government agencies.
Development sketches and wireframe
Prototypes and wireframes illustrated simplified content, clear flows, and accessible visual communication.
